Music Course DescriptionIn general music classes (grades K-6th) students will be working toward the proficient development of musical knowledge and skills pertaining to the National Music Standards. The focus is on Music Literacy and cultivates four Artistic Processes: Creating, Performing, Responding and Connecting. Rooted within the National Music Standards are fundamental elements of music: rhythm, melody, dynamics, tone quality texture, form and harmony. As well as musical composition, musical analysis, ensemble building and musical connections.
There are also Anchor Standards that describe the general knowledge that students will demonstrate pertaining to each of the Artistic Processes. Performance Standards are used to articulate the Anchor Standards into measurable learning goals.
Students will use a variety of curricula materials and instruments: Quaver online music program, Orff - Schulwerk, Spotlight on Music, rhythm instruments, singing, ukuleles, and synthesizers.
Listed below are the three Artistic Processes, their Components and Anchor Standards (from NAfME).
Creating- Imagine: Generate musical ideas for various purposes and contexts
- Plan and Make: Select and develop musical ideas for defined purposes and contexts
- Evaluate and Refine: Evaluate and refine selected musical ideas to create musical work that meets appropriate criteria.
- Present: Share creative musical work that conveys intent, demonstrates craftsmanship, and exhibits originality.

- Analyze: Analyze how the structure and context of varied musical works inform the response.
- Interpret: Develop personal interpretations that consider creators’ intent.
- Rehearse, Evaluate and Refine: Evaluate and refine personal and ensemble performances, individually or in collaboration with others.

Present: Perform expressively, with appropriate interpretation and technical accuracy, and in a manner appropriate to the audience and context.

- Select: Choose music appropriate for a specific purpose or context
